Best Time to Rent a Boat in Dubrovnik · Month-by-Month
Seven seasons of dock-side data on water temperature, swell, crowds, and how far ahead to book. The honest month-by-month answer for boat rental Dubrovnik.
The honest answer most blogs don’t give you: September is the best month. Not July. Not August. September. Here’s why — and what every other month looks like from inside our logbook.
The two-line summary
- Best overall: September. Warm sea (22-25°C), predictable weather, fewer crowds, more flexibility on bookings.
- Worst value: August. Hottest, most crowded, prices peak, you have to book 4-6 weeks ahead.
Read the table on the homepage best-time section for the full grid. Below: what each month actually feels like.
April
Water 15-17°C · Air 17-22°C · Quiet · Book 3 days ahead
The season opener. Bura wind is the wildcard — a cold north-easterly that can shut us down for 24-48 hours. When it blows you’re glad to be on land; when it stops the air is crystal clear and the visibility from a boat is the best of the year.
Swimming requires a 3mm wetsuit (we don’t lend these — bring your own or buy at Sport Vision in Lapad). Snorkelling at Blue Cave is fantastic in April because the plankton hasn’t bloomed yet — visibility is ~25m.
Pricing: standard rate, no peak surcharge, easy to get the boat you want with 3 days notice.
May
Water 17-20°C · Air 20-25°C · Quiet · Book 1 week ahead
This is the month I’d choose if I were a tourist. Calm seas, warm afternoons, the islands are still empty. Restaurants on Lopud are operating at half capacity so you walk in at 14:00 and get the best table.
The Quicksilver 675 books out 7 days ahead by mid-May because Brits and Germans figure this out before the Americans do.
June
Water 20-23°C · Air 24-28°C · Moderate · Book 2 weeks ahead
Swimming is excellent. School holidays haven’t started in most of Europe so it’s still navigable. Weekends are busier — book Saturday-Sunday two weeks out, weekdays one week out.
Best month for the Elafiti islands day trip — restaurant table availability on Lopud is still good and you can get a beach spot at Sunj without arriving at 09:00.
July
Water 23-26°C · Air 28-33°C · Peak · Book 4 weeks ahead
Peak season starts. The cave gets busy at 11:00. Lopud is full by 12:00. Marina Frapa has wait-times for fuel.
We start enforcing early-morning departures in July. If you book a Blue Cave tour with us, we leave at 09:00, not 09:30. The 30 minutes makes a difference.
Bonus: warmest water all season. If you have kids who hate cold water, this is the month.
August
Water 24-27°C · Air 29-34°C · Peak · Book 6 weeks ahead
Hottest month. We carry extra water and Bimini tops are non-negotiable on every boat. Pavement-level heat in Old Town hits 38°C — being on a boat is the only way to enjoy the Adriatic without melting.
Pricing: same as June/July. We don’t price-gouge in August even though we could. We’d rather have repeat customers than a bigger July invoice.
Crowds: pick mid-week (Tue-Thu) to avoid the worst of it. Weekend Blue Cave at 11:00 in August is a queue.
September
Water 22-25°C · Air 25-30°C · Busy → Quiet · Book 2 weeks ahead
The captain’s favourite. Sea is still warm, air is comfortable (no melting in Old Town), most families with kids are back at school, prices haven’t changed. The light is golden — if you’re a photographer, book a sunset cruise this month.
Premier September weeks are 5-15. After 20 September there’s noticeably less choice for restaurants in destination islands as konobas wind down for the season.
October
Water 20-22°C · Air 20-25°C · Quiet · Book 5 days ahead
Last month of operations. Closes 31 October every year. Beautiful light, occasional jugo wind (warm south-easterly that brings rain). Swimming is still pleasant.
October feels like May — calm, quiet, gorgeous — but the difference is the trees are turning gold on Lokrum. Half-day Lokrum + a stop at the Dead Sea lagoon, then sunset back at the marina, is the closer-of-the-season trip we recommend most.
